Effective June 9, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) will begin issuing Administrative Penalties for elevating devices in Ontario.
This enforcement measure is intended to strengthen compliance with regulatory requirements and enhance public safety.
Administrative Penalties will apply to specific non-compliances related to passenger elevators in residential settings, including:
- Condominiums
- Rental buildings
- Long-term care homes
- Student residences
Examples of non-compliance subject to penalties include:
- Failure to report incidents involving death or injury
- Failure to ensure that any alteration to an elevating device is performed only by contractors registered with TSSA
- Allowing individuals who are not employed by a TSSA-registered contractor and not trained as a mechanic or mechanic-in-training (under a mechanic’s supervision) to work on elevating devices
Non-compliance may result in significant penalties for contractors, license holders, owners, and other responsible individuals.
