Meet Byron Cole, our Project Engineer in our New Construction Department!
Byron has been with us since May 2018 (a little over 2 years now) after graduation from the University of Victoria. At work, Byron is usually enthusiastically preparing specifications or reports, diligently reviewing shop drawings or thoroughly monitoring construction progress at field reviews. Outside of work, we’re always amazed at all his outdoor adventures! Read more below to hear it from Byron himself!
What got you interested in Engineering?
I excelled at math and physics in high school, and was taught that an engineering degree would provide ample job opportunities with a decent salary. For me, that is what my engineering degree provides.
What is it like to work at GUNN?
A healthy work environment where I am challenged mentally, and work alongside good people. For me one of the highlights of working at GUNN is the constant diversity of work. On most jobs we are involved in all stages of construction and have well over 100 jobs. There’s a new challenge every day, opportunity for growth, and excitement.
What is a common misconception in the Vertical Transportation Industry?
Generally, elevators do not fall downwards. They “fall” upwards because the counterweight is heavier than the cab.
What are your goals for the next few years?
Professionally, I look forward to obtaining my Professional Engineering designation. This will be an exciting milestone.
Personally, I would like to continue to climb and push my limits safely. I’m looking at climbing harder, and more remote alpine routes. Specifically, I’d like to climb the North East Buttress of Slesse.
Finally, here are 3 things you may not know about Byron!
- I’m an active member and trip leader for the Alpine Club of Canada.
- I was born and raised on Vancouver Island.
- I strongly believe in honesty, optimism, and doing the right thing.
